PhD Studentship in Combustion Engines: Gas Engine at University of Lund 2011 in Sweden

Doctorate positions at University of Lund in Energy Sciences – Gas Engine in Sweden

Study Subject: Energy Sciences- Gas Engine
Employer: University of Lund
Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: The Division of Combustion Engines works with next generation engines with less environmental impact. To actively do something about the global emissions of CO2 and other green house gases we need to find a more fuel efficient engine for our vehicles but at the same time we cannot allow local emissions to increase. Div. of Combustion Engines are world leading in the fields of HCCI and the subsequent PPC engine technology. To this highly dynamic research group we are currently looking for three Ph.D. students.

This project aims to improve the understanding of utilization of gaseous fuels in combustion engines. This is the fifth generation of gas engine research at Lund University. The former generations have studied combustion chamber optimization, dilution strategies (lean or EGR), engine control with ion current signals and fuel specifications. In this fifth generation the ignition process of gas will be in focus. It has been shown that with highly diluted gas mixtures it becomes increasingly harder to get a use conventional spark ignition. The general eligibility requirement for doctoral studies is a university degree of at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 credits at an advanced level.Selection to postgraduate studies is based on the estimated ability to perform well in the studies. This estimation is based primarily on the results of the studies on basic and advanced level, in particular:
1. Knowledge and skills relevant to postgraduate studies within this area, such as course work in engine technology, laser diagnostics, etc.
2. Estimated ability to work independently and to formulate and solve scientific questions. This ability can be established, for example, based on a master thesis or in a discussion of scientific problems during a potential interview.
3. Skills in written and oral communication.
4. Other experience relevant to postgraduate studies, such as professional experience.
A suitable background for this position is M.Sc. (Civilingenjör) or equivalent. A background in controls or engine processes can be suitable but is no requirement. Mechanical Engineering, Electronic or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics or similar would be suitable specializations. We especially welcome female applicants.
