PhD Studentship in Signals and Systems Engineering at the School of Information Science, Computer and Electrical Engineering Halmstad University in Sweden.

Study Subject: Signals and Systems Engineering with specialization Machine learning/Mechatronics especially Automatic Visual Perception of the Environment
Course Level: PhD
Scholarship Provider: Halmstad University

Eligibility:-The suitable candidate has a master´s degree in computer science or engineering, or alternatively signals and systems or electrical engineering. Students expecting to finalize their degree during the spring 2011 are also welcome to apply.

-The student´s ability to benefit from doctoral studies will be taken into account when we make the appointment.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: The employment as doctoral student concerns individual research studies, research and teaching (up to 20 %) within the subject field. We are seeking a doctoral student in machine learning / mechatronics with specialization in automatic visual perception of the environment for mobile robotic applications. As doctoral student you will work with the development of future sensors and algorithms for visual 3D-perception. With 3D-perception autonomous robots can identify and build a semantic map of the environment consisting of objects that are classified into different categories. It´s about giving the robot the ability to be aware of its surroundings. A concrete application is to get a robot that autonomously builds a map of articles in a warehouse and automatically relates article identity from the warehouse database with its position (metric) in the warehouse. The developed technology will be demonstrated and assessed in real industrial applications. The work will be done in close collaboration with Swedish industry partners in sensing and control systems for automated guided vehicles.

Scholarship Application Deadline: no later than 2011-06-15
